Voluntourism: Volunteer Tourism

We have all seen the charitable companies that send in doctors to underdeveloped countries. We know that these doctors are an incredible asset to the communities in which they work. They save lives on a daily basis, often with the use of the simplest of things modern medicine has to offer. We admire the organization that backs the volunteer projects and especially the individuals who donate their time and effort to these trips.

More recently there is a trend in volunteer tourism. This is similar to what large charity organizations have been doing for decades. However, one difference is that the volunteers consider it a working vacation. They donate their time and energy to help with a cause, and in exchange they get to experience a new place and culture.

Medical voluntourism is still a major one. There is such a great need for good medical attention in so many areas of the earth. Having an experienced and well educated doctor who understands modern medicine and has tools and medication at his disposal is a blessing that can transform countless lives. Even a simple medical procedure or even medicine can save a life, and this story is told over and over.

Other types of projects include helping people in poverty stricken countries learn to care for themselves and find sustainable and practical solutions to the problems that face them concerning meeting every day needs of providing their families with food to eat, a place to live and clothing to wear.

Engineers and ecologists travel and help local people learn how to conserve the natural resources that surround them and how to make the most of the gifts their native land has to offer them. They provide solutions to problems such as reforestation and sustainable farming that will improve life for the natives as well as helping to save the environment.

But there are many other types of volunteer tourism. It isn’t always necessary to be well educated to make a difference. The opportunity to do some good combined with the chance to see a new place and work in an environment they might not otherwise have ever seen brings people who may not have specific skill but are willing to do whatever needs to be done, from digging trenches to cleaning up after animals in a nature park.

Volunteer tourism is a branch of tourism that is steadily growing. In this type of tourism the traveler can help the destination by spending money that helps the economy to grow, but also by getting to work to actually make improvements that are needed in those places. It is a win-win situation and relaxing and seeing new sights while also working hard and making a difference is certainly the recipe for a great vacation!
